The PIER Mentoring program, originally funded by California Sea Grant to the Center for Diverse Leadership in Science at UCLA in partnership with East LA College, seeks to serve and uplift underrepresented and non-traditional students in STEM by offering hands-on and lab-based experiences for community college students. ELAC students participate in lectures and workshops led by ELAC faculty and laboratory staff, and field trips to locations such as Bolsa Chica park and lagoon, Surfrider's Blue Water Task Force Santa Monica Beach sampling location, and the Cabrillo Aquarium and tidepools co-led by ELAC and CDLS faculty and staff. UCLA graduate students in the bio- and geosciences serve as mentors to ELAC students interested in gaining further research experience in field and laboratory settings.
